• Postdoctoral research associate, Geological Sciences, Brown University

We are searching for a postdoctoral research associate to work on a NASA Astrobiology funded project to investigate the organic composition of carbonaceous chondrites. The candidate will also have opportunities to do collaborative research at NASA Ames Institute. The position is extendable to three years. The starting salary is $45,000, with full benefits.

Carbonaceous chondrites are a unique class of meteorites that contain large amounts of abiotically synthesized organic compounds: many are also found in biological systems. This position will study the structures and synthetic pathways of these compounds to shed important new light on the origin of life on Earth. We are equipped with state-of-the-art organic and isotopic analytical instrumentation including GC, GCMS, HPLC-MS (and DAD, FLD), GCIRMS systems. The primary goals of the project are to define the enantiomeric excess in multiple classes of chiral organic compounds, to probe the organic structure of macromolecules, and to determine the carbon and hydrogen isotopic compositions of volatile components in carbonaceous chondrites. Successful candidate will also have opportunity to partiticipate in other ongoing research projects on paleoclimate stuides and biogeochemistry, and is encouraged to develop new lines of research topics of mutual interests.

The candidate should have a solid background in organic chemistry/geochemistry, especially organic analytical chemistry and be familiar with and willing to learn more advanced organic analytical instrumentation. Previous experience in meteorite research is preferred, but not required. Strong ability to communicate in both writing and spoken English is critical to the success of the research.

Please send (email is preferred) a curriculum vitae, names of three referees, a statement of your qualifications, and research interests to: Yongsong Huang ( E-mail: yongsong_huang@brown.edu ). We will review applications as received and we hope to fill this position by September, 2009. We will appreciate if you can forward this advertisement to potential candidates.

Brown University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. We welcome applications from minority or female candidates.
