GSJ formalizes relations with European Association of Geochemistry

The Geochemical Society of Japan (GSJ) held a signing ceremony with the Geochemical Society (GS) and the European Association of Geochemistry (EAG) at the recent Fall AGU meeting in San Francisco, USA. The signed agreements intend to build collaborative activities between the three organizations in general and specifically with the V.M. Goldschmidt Conference. In attendance for the ceremony were President Naohiro Yoshida (GSJ), next President Hodaka Kawahata (GSJ), President Chris Ballentine (EAG), President Rick Carlson (GS), and Vice-President Barbara Sherwood Lollar (GS). AEA Water Isotope Interlaboratory Comparison (WICO), 2011

The Isotope Hydrology Laboratory of the International Atomic Energy Agency is organizing the fourth interlaboratory comparison for laboratories engaged in stable isotope analyses (2H and O18) of water samples. The exercise is part of the IAEA Water Resources Programme to promote quality assurance and to improve the reliability and comparability of stable isotope measurements.

Those willing to join the exercise should confirm their participation by sending the complete postal address of the participating institution with name of the investigator, e-mail, fax number and homepage (if available) to the Acting Unit Head of Isotope Hydrology Laboratory with the subject field WICO 2011:

Mr Manzoor Choudhry, Isotope Hydrology Laboratory,

Conversion tool of geochemical data to be displayed on Google Earth (JAMSTEC)

We, Research program for data and sample analyses of IFREE, JAMSTEC, developed a tool to display the geochemical data on Google Earth. This tool can convert the geochemical data downloaded from PetDB or GEOROC databases to a KML file. The data sheet you made following the style of the above databases can be also converted to a KML file.

Now this conversion tool is available on our homepage.
Please go to the following URL and try it.

International joint projects: Hong Kong, India and Japan

The Royal Society is inviting applications for its international joint projects for research in Hong Kong, India and Japan. The programme is designed to enable international collaboration by providing a mobility grant for researchers to cover travel, subsistence and research expenses. The collaboration should be based on a single project including two teams or individuals: one based in the UK and the other based outside the UK. Allsciences covered by the society are eligible.

Joint Projects are intended for UK and overseas scientists of proven research ability. Project leaders must be of at least postdoctoral status or equivalent. UK collaborators should be resident within the UK. EU citizens may apply provided they hold a permanent position in the UK. Non-EU citizens may apply provided they have held a permanent position at a UK institute for at least three consecutive years, exclusive of any period in full time education.

The scheme runs for two years for joint projects with researchers based in Hong Kong and Japan. Joint projects with Indian researchers may last for up to three years. Grants provides a maximum of £6,000 per year. This may be used to claim the costs of travel and subsistence.

Deadline: 15 March, 15 June, 15 September and 15 December annually

The announcement of a special discount for graduate students on membership to the Geochemical Society of Japan

We have prepared a special discount for the student membership of the Geochemical Society of Japan. Graduate students in their first two years of study and undergraduate students who are accepted to graduate schools next year are eligible. The discounted membership fee is 7,000 yen for two years instead of the regular student membership fee of 5,000 yen per year.

Membership in the Geochemical Society of Japan has many benefits, including free subscriptions of “Geochemical Journal” (6 issues/year) and “Chikyukagaku” (4 issues/year, in Japanese), discounted registration fees for the annual meeting of our society and the Goldschmidt Conference, discount on volumes of the “Geochemistry Series” (in Japanese), and eligibility to apply for the Torii Fund. All the benefits in student membership are the same as those in regular non-student membership.

We have many young active members in our society. By joining the society, graduate students will be able to interact with young researchers to expand their interest in their research and study. If you are an advisor of graduate students, I would appreciate it if you would encourage them to join the Geochemical Society of Japan and take advantage of this special discount.
